A turbulent past hides behind the peaceful air of ancient Dunbar. It stands on the direct coast route between England and Edinburgh and for centuries the Scots and English fought to gain control over it. Mainy battles and seiges are dotted through the towns bloody history, starting with King Kenneth's sacking of the town in AD986 to Oliver Cromwells victory over the Scots in 1650. Five years after his success Cromwell granted £300 towards the building of the towns harbour. Now only a few fishing boats remain and the picturesque harbour with the ruined castle beside it forms an attractive centrepiece to the quiet resort.
