Originally the airfield was the site of a First World War aerodrome, later to become RAF Turnhouse.
The original facility was sited close to the main East Coast railway line. Aircraft arrived in crates on trains, were assembled and sent into action from the grass strip.
Turnhouse Aerodrome was established in 1915 obstensively for the Royal Flying Corps. It became a civil airline facility in 1960 although domestic passenger flights to London had been scheduled since 1947.
At the start of the Second World War in 1939, the, then, grass strip was paved for the first time and became the home of RAF 603 squadron. Today it is Scotland's 2nd busiest domestic airport.
Turnhouse is also the home of a very fine golf course - one of the very best in the City.... < more > |
