It has a varied, if somewhat flat landscape, with beautiful sandy beaches.
The earliest mention of Tiree was in an Irish account of the Picts which said that they sailed northwards and landed on "Tiree...".
The Norse occupation of the Island which lasted for approximately 400 years, is evident in many of the Township names of today. After the defeat of the Norsemen under Haco at Largs, the norsemen lost control of the Island. In 1674 it came into the possession of the Campbells of Argyll, who still own it today.
Benefiting from the Gulf Stream, Tiree has a mild climate and warmish coastal waters. Tiree is known as the "Sunshine Island of the North" and is mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records.
