The main way to get around Edinburgh, apart from
walking obviously, is by bus. Edinburgh has a huge bus system that will
take you anywhere you want to go quickly and cheaply. However, buses
can be somewhat complicated sometimes so we will try as best we can
to make the system easier for you! If however you are looking to travel
round the city to do a bit of sightseeing, then we must inform you that
there are bus tours that will do just that. City bus tours normally
leave from Waverley Bridge and will take you round all the important
places. Once you have bought your ticket, it is valid for the whole
day so as well as being told what you are looking if you look to your
left, you can also use them like a normal bus! Tickets can be around
£5-£10 and can be bought at Waverley Bridge.
Buses
Edinburgh has many local bus
services taking you pretty much anywhere you want to go and fairly
cheaply as well. Though one thing we must mention is that although you
can buy bus tickets on the bus, they cannot give you any change, so
you must make sure that before going on a bus, you have got change from
your £20 note. You don't want to be parting with that for the
sake of a £2 journey now do you! The buses, being as nice as they
are, also offer a day ticket option. This means you can have unlimited
travel for the whole day, anywhere within the city, for around £2.
One way of making the bus system easier is to go to
the bus company's websites where you will find a journey planner and
maps that you can study in advance. If you don't have a chance to access
the internet, then a lot of buses stop at least once at one of the many
bus-stops along Princes Street, so if in doubt, just walk along from
stop to stop to study the large timetables and routes that are at every
stop. If you are lucky however, it might be worth a look in St Andrews
Bus Station. Most buses that leave here travel away from Edinburgh but
you do get a few that stay within the city.
Taxis
The easiest method of travelling. Simply look for the big
black cabs with their roof light switched on and hold out your hand
so they can see you. Many taxi drivers also offer set fairs to take
you to the airport, which can be handy when travelling with bulky luggage.
Taxi travel can prove expensive after a while though, so normally, it
is best to leave it till you actually require a quick journey - like
to the airport, or when you have 4 or 5 people to split the cost, in
which case it can actually be cheaper and less complex than taking the
bus. Taxi
companies can also be phoned in advance, which again is handy when
you need to get to the airport for a specific time.
Trams - coming soon to Edinburgh
Edinburgh plans to have a fully working tram system
by the year 2010 which will make travel a lot simpler! But, unfortunately,
that is in 4 years so we will have to wait!
