Genealogy

They say there are upwards of 30m people outside Scotland who admit to Scottish ancestry. How many don’t admit to it! As Scotland only has a population of 5m this clearly identifies a need for Scots to broaden their horizons. There are historical reasons for this, especially the “clearances” in both the Highlands and the Lowlands – the latter frequently being overlooked – in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Finding one’s roots can be a very emotional experience especially when faced with the sight of ruined croft houses in lonely but beautiful Highland glens, but the desire to learn where you came from is strong in all of us. For many such visitors, Edinburgh’s New Register House is one of the first ports of call. There are others such as “Seallam!” in Harris which specialises in Hebridean families. There are also a number of Tour Operator and Specialist Genealogical Businesses which can help you to organise your research – and can point you to research material which could save you a lot of time and effort.
