Not even self catering accommodation gives you the freedom that caravanning and camping can offers. You can't just pack up and go to another self catering establishment every night - well you could but it would be an expensive exercise but rewarding in many other ways no doubt as Scotland has some superb self catering accommodation available!
What sometimes restricts visitors aspirations in staying in a certain area is the availability of accommdation. However, in rural areas, the availability of caravan and camping facilities is often much better than hotel, guest house, B&B or even self catering - it "reaches places where other accommodation doesn't reach", so to speak.
Standards in Scotland are very high as there is so much competition as well as a fair amount of regulation as all sites (over 5 pitches) have to be licensed by the local authority. You can also get on to special sites if you become a member of certain caravan and camping organisations, for example the Camping and Caravanning Club.
Most sites have shopping facilites ranging from basic essentials to wide ranging and many also have restaurants and activity facilities. They will all have local knowledge and be able to advise on local visitor facilities and places of interest.
In busier areas and especially during school holiday times it is, perhaps, wise to book in advance just to make sure and don't forget to mention a mains electricity plug in point should you need one!
Other necessities? Well, fishing rod, cycle, walking boots, wet weather clothing, your camera and insect cream!
