Guest Houses in Scotland tend to be a more commercial form of B&B, sometimes, but not always, bigger than B&Bs but with fewer visitor facilities than hotels - this does not, however, make them a "poor relation". Anything but! Guest Houses offer a more personal and informal experience to hotels but with more visitor facilities than B&Bs. They also tend to offer evening meals as standard.
In Guest Houses, visitors have the opportunity of "coming and going" as they wish either into their bedroom or visitors lounge at any time of the day, something that B&Bs tend not to be able to offer.
Because of the visitors' lounge facility, Guest Houses offer an opportunity for guests to meet each other and discuss where they have been and what they have done over the last few days - an interaction of ideas which is only usually available to visitors staying at B&Bs at breakfast time.
You will, however, expect to pay more in a guest house but this is not always the case and depends on the range of and quality of visitor facilities (en suite etc).
