Scotland is the home of golf where it is still the people’s game and as such, the pretentiousness practiced by many southern UK golf clubs is a rarity up here – but there are many clubs with ancient traditions which are jealously guarded. The range of courses in Scotland is vast, from the 9-hole village course like the Tarbat Ness course in Portmahomack to Open Championship venues like Muirfield, near Edinburgh or Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry in Ayrshire – and the greatest of them all, the Old Course in St Andrews with probably the most difficult (especially in inclement weather), Carnoustie, not far away near Dundee. Most of these championship courses are “links” courses, but a fine example of an inland course is Gleneagles near Auchterarder in Perthshire.
These are World-class courses and as such are at the high end of the pricing structure. Generally you can obtain round or day tickets for £15 upwards and visitors who bring income to clubs are usually very welcome!
A large number of these courses are covered within YesScotland and, if planning a golf tour, there are many Tour Operators who may be able to do the groundwork for you.
