Information about MotherwellLocated to the south-east of Glasgow at the South Calder Water in North Lanarkshire. The town started as a weaving village but quickly grew with the coming of the railway in the 1840's, the starting of iron works in 1870 and steelworks in 1880 brought Burgh status and a very much enlaged town by the middle of the last cent. The heavy industry that made the town, iron, steel, coal and heavy engineering have now gone from the town and today the site of the former Ravenscraig Steel Works lies empty, awaiting redevelopment in the 21st cent.
The Town Hall of 1887, and the churches of Dalzell North and Dalziel High are worthy of note. To the west of the town is the site of the Lady Well, the town's namesake, which supplied water into the town up until the mid-19th cent. There are 2 railway stations, Motherwell and Airbles Road.
