Information about Selkirk

Situated 19 miles west of Kelso, Selkirk became a royal burgh in the 13 the century and was the location for a meeting of the Scottish Parliament called by King William the Lion in 1204. In 1113, Prince David founded a Tyronesian abbey here, but it was later moved to Kelso for greater convenience. The town is home to a statue of Sir Walter Scott, who was sheriff of the county from 1799 to 1832. Selkirk's nost prominenet industry was shoe-making and as such, the people of the town are known as 'Souters' (shoe-makers).... < more >
