Holiday Ideas - Forth Road & Rail Bridges
yesscotland - says:
Opened in 1964 by Her Majesty the Queen the road bridge at the time was the longest suspension bridge in Europe. At one and a half miles in length this bridge is an amazing structure and is crossed by thousands each year and has seen many changes over the years with more to come. Originally there were tolls on both northbound and southbound carriageways, now there are only tolls going northbound.
Future plans for the bridge have not been fully agreed but people are aware that something must change. In 1964 1,434,422 cars crossed the bridge now this figure has soared to well over 25,000,000. We shall need to watch this space to see what the future of this well known landscape structure holds.
Completed in 1890 the one and a half mile rail bridge which sits next to the road bridge is generally considered one of the great feats of modern civilization. It was the worlds first major steel bridges and along with its car friendly bridge is one of the most photographed bridges in the world.
There are many viewpoints of these bridges both from the north and south sides. South Queensferry is one of the most popular places to view these structures and snap a quick shot of them. There are many souvenir shops here and a little of the bridges history can be bought.
Still from the South side you can go to the viewpoint of the bridges with a big car park, seats and some signs telling you about the bridges.
From the north side of the bridge you can head down into north queensferry and catch the spectacular view from various points there.
If you have time stick about until it gets dark and these amazing structures bring on a whole other dimension when the lights get switched on.
The bridge currently costs £1 for a car to cross. It is well worth a visit and for any budding photographers out there you will defiantly enjoy what the forth bridges have to offer.
