Holiday Ideas - New Lanark & Falls Of Clyde
yesscotland - says:
Less than an hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh the New Lanark World Heritage Site is an 18th century cotton mill village. Close to the Falls of The Clyde this site offers the potential visitor a great deal. With over 400,000 visitors a year this is on attraction you should not miss.
Robert Owen the mill manager changed the lives of those who worked in New Lanark. There was no corporal punishment and child labour. People who lived and worked in the mill were offered homes, schooling, health care and food that was affordable. This concept was years ahead of its time.
You can go into the visitor centre and see how the people worked and lived. Their story is told by the ghost of a mill working child called Annie MacLeod. You can experience the lives of the workers through the Annie MacLeod experience, shop in Owen’s Warehouse( The Edinburgh Woollen Mill) on site or meander along the side of the Clyde and witness the Falls of Clyde.
There are 3 waterfalls to view on the walk through the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve (owned and managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust). These have been viewed for years by many people including poets and painters (Wordsworth & Turner for instance).
Dundaff Linn is near to the village, about 25 minute walk will take you to the Corra Linn (pictured), the highest of the falls and a 35 minute walk will take you to Bonnington Linn.
