Holiday Ideas - Ardnamurchan
yesscotland - says:
Until quite recently, Ardnamurchan was a destination – a place you would stay for a week or perhaps two in some of the excellent Self Catering units available or the local hotels, guest houses and B&Bs.
Thanks to the advent of the Kilchoan – Tobermory vehicle ferry service and special ferry ticketing, this fantastic peninsula is now very much open to touring visitors crossing from Oban to Craignure (to see Iona Abbey, perhaps as well as the many other attractions of Mull) and then from Tobermory to Kilchoan or alternatively the Fishnish to Lochaline crossing (to take in Morvern) and then on to Mallaig to cross to Skye and perhaps Uig to the Uists.
This type of touring is especially popular with cyclists and backpackers as it takes you off the main tourist routes to a more “unspoilt” rural Highland landscape. The roads alone tell you that this is not a very busy part of the world! And the roads are part and parcel of the Ardnamurchan experience – everything appears to be open. Animals, farm and wild roam freely and as such must be respected.
Ardnamurchan is a place for people who want peace and quiet – who want to walk and watch the wildlife, to explore the coasts, the bays and the rivers and, perhaps, do some fishing on the lochs and rivers. There is also an opportunity for deer stalking through the Estate and it is for those who want really first class self catering and/or want to meet the local people in the friendly hotels, guest houses and B&Bs. YesScotland certainly recommends Ardnamurchan.
For your information, Western Ardnamurchan is on sheet 47 of Ordnance Survey's 1:50000 series.
