Holiday Ideas Dumfries and Galloway

YesScotland says:

The far south west of Scotland is a haven for lovers of gardens, woodland walks and picturesque seaside villages.

With its warm micro-climate,lowland landscape and lovely views, travelling down and along the coast of Loch Ryan is a joy in a lovely gentle, rolling way.

Port Patrick with its quaint harbour, good pubs and hotels is a particular favourite. Couple a visit to the seaside spot with the cliff walk from the edge of the village and you can get a bit of exercise and not feel too bad about the excellentlunch to be had on your return to the excellent pubs and hotels at the harbour.

The historic towns of the area are as interesting as you’ll find any where in Scotland, Dumfries with its association with Robert Burns, the national bard is well worth a look.

The old villages of Newton Stewart, Castle Douglas and Thornhill are still centres for the farming community.Individual shops, tearooms and antique shops invite you to spend more than a quick visit. Sitting on a hillside above Gretna it is not too hard to imagine the runaway lovers of yesteryear discovering the charm and tranquillity of this part of the country, when they eventually ventured out after their nuptials and pondered on the realisation of their elopement!
