To both Glasgow in the west and Edinburgh in the east, there are fast and efficient cross-border rail services from many parts of England and Wales by GNER and Virgin Trains. Also available are the FirstScotRail overnight Caledonian Sleeper services from London Euston to Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Fort William, Glasgow and Inverness.

Rail links on mainland Scotland go as far as Thurso in Caithness, via Inverness to the north, Aberdeen to the east, Mallaig in the west and Stranraer, Dumfries and Berwick in the south.
